NAS PROJECTS

Specific Objective 3 (SO3) - Transport Infrastructure
16 September 2008

The cost of transporting cane from the farm to the mill represents a high percentage of operating costs.

In order to reduce these costs, the NAS aims to finance road and bridge infrastructure to a) reduce the distance to the mill and b) improve the road quality, thereby lowering the unit cost of transport per km.

The EC Multi-annual Indicative Plan allocates a total of €21.895 for transport infrastructure.

The 2008 Action Plan proposes to finance the following works:
  • Construction of a new two-way bridge over the River Usuthu at Siphofaneni
  • The upgrading to paved standard of the D 50 Siphofaneni – St Phillips road (24 km)
  • The upgrading to paved standard of the 7 km section between the MR 8 and the D 50 (Maphonbeni Bridge road)
  • The gravelling of 10 km feeder roads in the LUSIP area.vn1

In the second Phase, the NAS will prioritise road and bridge infrastructure in the northern mills area.
